Having children seems so utterly consuming of time and self that having them for any reason other than a true desire to be a parent (unless, with luck, that desire is discovered after they're born) seems like it would easily cause resentment and regret. What one life could have been is instead something else, something inescapable (even if the parent leaves, they're still parents and they know it - they can never truly be free).
