I don't think there's anything wrong with expecting an ally. That's basically the most critical component of any trusting relationship. But an ally isn't someone who takes your side no matter what; it's someone you can trust to have your best interests at heart, including by disagreeing with you (though, maybe not in a way that would embarrass you in front of other people).

It's hard to fight centuries of socialization, as (probably straight) men are also experiencing (many of them still feel compelled to pay, to give their coats, to open doors, etc.). But this is addressed specifically to women to show them how they/we are only hurting ourselves by being so "helpless."
