I’m sitting here thinking about the use of the word “pussy” for a man. I understand being called one is doubly offensive because not only are you somehow showing weakness, but worse, you’re also GURLY. What if the word were replaced with “coward,” or “scaredy cat”? What if a man or woman is genuinely exhibiting behavior that should be commented on playfully, but genuinely, by friends (“Don’t be such a coward that you sabotage your education….so what if you have to perform in front of the class!” Or “You’re going to be a chicken and not break up in person?”)? Behavior that isn’t strong, isn’t manly OR womanly, because it’s childish, not grown up? In an ideal world, that’s all “man up” would mean: grow up. Be an adult.
