Loved reading this. I grew up in Germany, and the same applies (or, at least, applied - I left in '93) re: cover-ups and everything hanging out. Also agree that it's a glorious privilege to get to know a different country beyond the tourist experience, to such a degree that you take the centuries-old buildings for granted and simply LIVE there.
