One might argue that who you are - white, male - has mattered more than what you write for some time. Which is why most of the stories we’ve seen have been from the white male perspective. One might also argue that increased competition can breed fear and insecurity (oh no - my own previously comparatively easy path, my automatic privilege, has been yanked, and now all of these other people are being considers, too!). It’s a lot easier to win when there are fewer people to compete with.
