Self-publishing doesn’t necessarily mean paying someone to deliver your book to readers. (Just a clarification.) Unless you do pay someone, of course! But even traditionally published authors can be said to pay people for that privilege by giving up a percentage of their earnings, or hiring publicists, etc.

That said, what an experience. At the time, it must have been so defeating.
